3rd Grade Jump Start - Reading: Week 2

Reading 

Week 2 - Day 1

  • Read the text titled Reading to Max
  • What genre is this text? How do you know?
  • Readers have questions before, during and after reading. List any questions you may have.  
  • After reading the text, retell the story to a family member. Be sure to include all of the important parts of the text in the order in which they happened.
  • Read for 25 minutes. Any book of choice.

Reading

Week 2 - Day 2

  • Read the text titled Reading to Max agan.
  • Read this excerpt from the text. Think about how Ben is feeling at this moment. How do you know? How is Max feeling? What evidence from the text helps you know?  Write down your thinking in your journal.

“Here’s my book,” Ben told Max. He had taken a book he’d been working on. He started reading, and Max purred. After a few minutes, Ben looked up. Some of the cats stayed on his classmates’ laps, but other cats roamed the room while the kids read.  

  • What kind of character is Ben? What kind of character is Max? Think of words, or traits, that describe them? Can you find evidence from the text to support your thinking?
  • Read for 25 minutes. Any book of choice.

  • Characters can often overcome a challenge they face. In this story, what was Ben’s problem or challenge? How did he solve it or overcome it? Write down your thinking in your journal.
  • What point of view is this story told from? *First Person  (character in the story) or *Third Person (narrator or outsider)?
  • Read for 25 minutes. Any book of choice.

Week 2 - Day 4

  • Think about the main character, Ben. How are you similar to him? How are you different? 
  • Ben works hard at reading by practicing, and persevering. Think of something that may be difficult for you, or was difficult in the past. How did you get better at it? Write down your thoughts in your journal and discuss with your family.
  • Read for 25 minutes. Any book of choice.
