Student reading a book

Reading

Week 1 - Day 1

  • Start an August journal today where you will include all your written work from this month! This could be on Google Docs, in a spiral notebook or just some lined paper.
  • Read Into The Rapids. While reading, pay attention to the footnotes to help you determine the meaning of lesser known words that the author has used. Why do you think the author put them there? How does this help you as a reader?
  • What genre is this piece of text? How do you know? (try to be as specific as possible)
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

Week 1 - Day 2

Wyatt’s brother, Johnny had leaned toward him, whispering, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to fall in?”

“Like a flume ride,” Wyatt had joked, grinning.

Dad had shushed them, making it clear they should be listening to the guide.

  • What does this show you about Wyatt and Johnny and how they feel about the trip? How is their father feeling about their behavior? Why was this important for the author to add to the story?
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

Week 1 - Day 3

  • Reread Into The Rapids.
  • In your journal, respond to the following question: Do you think it was necessary for Wyatt to fall into the river for him to fully understand its power? Why or why not? Describe a time when an unpleasant experience helped you learn an important lesson?
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

Week 1 - Day 4

  • Reread Into The Rapids.
  • In your journal, respond to the following question: In this story, Wyatt discovers how strong the river is. Do you think this is proof that nature is more powerful than humans? Cite examples from the text, your own experience, and/or history in your answer. Use this response form to help you compose a complete, detailed answer.
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

Week 1 - Day 5

  • Watch this video on theme.
  • Reread Into The Rapids. Think about the main theme of the text. Which of the following ideas describes the main theme of Into the Rapids? (Remember, a theme is a universal idea that can be applied to many different situations.)

  • Nature is powerful and can be dangerous if you’re not careful
  • It’s best to follow you instincts when something goes wrong
  • Rivers are too dangerous to be used for sports or fun

  • Once you have determined the theme, go back into the text and try to find at least one piece of evidence that supports your theme (you are looking for something written in the text that backs up your opinion). Once you find one piece, challenge yourself to find another!
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice
