GRADE LEVEL PLACEMENT CRITERIA
Minimum age requirement for Kindergarten
As a result of legislation passed in September 2010, children are admitted into a Kindergarten program at the beginning of the school year, or whenever they move into the district, if their 5th birthday is on or before September 1.
 
A child shall be eligible for enrollment in kindergarten at the beginning of the school year, or at a later time in the same year, if the child has his/her fifth birthday on or before September 1 of the applicable school year.  (Education Code 48000, 48010)
 
Any child who will have his/her fifth birthday from September 2 through December 2 (inclusive) of the applicable school year shall be offered a transitional kindergarten program in accordance with law and Board policy.  (Education Code 48000)
 
Proof of age shall be required of all enrolling students. Fountain Valley School District does not participate in early admission for under-age children into transitional kindergarten and/or kindergarten. AR 5111, BP 6170.1
 
In order to enroll in school for 2020-21, you must provide proof that your child has a birthdate ON or BEFORE December 2, 2015.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: My child will turn five years old on September 2 and I want him to go to Kindergarten… can they?
A: No, Fountain Valley School District follows State Education Code and your child must turn five years old on or before September 1 to enroll in Kindergarten. Your child is eligible to attend Transitional Kindergarten, since their fifth birthday is between September 2 and December 2.
Q: My child will turn five years old on August 30, but I don’t want to send
them to Kindergarten yet… can I enroll them in Transitional Kindergarten?
A: Possibly, children whose birthdays fall between July 1 and September 1 are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten if there is space. Children are placed based on space with a priority for students whose birthdays are closest to September 1.
Q: We just moved from overseas and my child is age-­appropriate for 3rd grade, but they did not finish 2nd grade at the prior school… can I enroll my child in 2nd grade? 
A: Most of the time we place children in the grade level for which they are age-­appropriate. You are welcome to talk to the principal at your child’s school regarding placement questions you may have.
Q: We just moved from out-of-state/overseas and my child is age appropriate for 6th grade, but they were in 8th grade in our city/country… what grade level will my child be enrolled in?
A: Most of the time we place children in the grade level for which they are age-appropriate. You are welcome to talk to the principal at your child’s school regarding placement questions you may have.
