Fountain Valley School Closed One Day due to Suspicious Device Incident

Fountain Valley, CA, September 15, 2014: Tamura Elementary School in Fountain Valley, part of the Fountain Valley School District, was closed Monday, September 15 due to a suspicious package being found at the back of campus.
“We closed the school for the day because it simply is not worth the risk to the lives and safety of children and staff members when we have a reasonable suspicion of a harmful device,” said Tamura Principal Kathy Davis.
The device was found before classes began by the janitor, who informed the principal, who made the decision to call 911.  The Fountain Valley Police Department responded immediately, and found the circumstances of sufficient concern to alert the Orange County Sheriff Bomb Squad, who then responded promptly at the Tamura school site.
A few students had arrived before school as part of a regular early morning child care program on the opposite end of campus.  Parents picked up those students, and all other parents were alerted by telephone message that Tamura Elementary would be closed for the day.
Superintendent Marc Ecker and other district administrators traveled immediately to the Tamura campus, where the police department ordered a complete evacuation while a thorough investigation, including a complete search of the campus, was conducted.  It was determined that the item in question was not an explosive and had been left innocently.  No Fountain Valley School District employees received any threats of any kind to any schools.
Superintendent Ecker announced, “I wish to thank our principal and her staff for taking prompt action to protect children, employees and the public.  And we are grateful to the Fountain Valley Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff Department for their quick and professional response.  Our parents and community is also to be congratulated for the orderly and timely manner in which they picked up students and made alternative arrangements for their children for today.”
