Fountain Valley School District Names Mrs. Joanna Knobel Teacher of the Year

Fountain Valley, CA, April 1, 2015: The Fountain Valley School District announced that Mrs. Joanna Knobel, second grade teacher at Gisler Elementary, has been named the Teacher of the Year for 2015.

“Mrs. Knobel is an amazing teacher who has dedicated herself to changing the lives of children,” stated Fountain Valley School District Superintendent, Dr. Mark Johnson. “Joanna is passionate, driven, kind, intelligent, highly skilled and a terrific colleague.  She embodies all of the characteristics that exemplify our tradition of excellence in the Fountain Valley School District.”

Mrs. Knobel has been in the teaching profession for the past 19 years and has done brilliant work throughout her career.  Over the last few years, she has played a vital role in Gisler’s shift to the Common Core Standards.  For example, Joanna regularly hosts K-2 collaborative staff development in the area of mathematics.  In addition to her work at Gisler, Mrs. Knobel has served on numerous committees, including the District Common Core Steering Committee and the Math Textbook Adoption Committee.

Ms. Knobel is a leader, a mentor, and the true epitome of a great teacher. Embracing the quote by Alexandra Trenfor, “The best teachers show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see,” Joanna believes in the power of purposeful instruction and is constantly striving to make her lessons more meaningful.

“Joanna Knobel is a mentor and inspiration to those around her. She is always ready to share all that she has learned about teaching mathematics to students,” commented Gisler Principal Erin Bains.  “Joanna has shared the information she has collected on teaching with other teachers by hosting lunchtime collaboration meetings covering topics such as Counting Collections, Number Talks, and Developing Number Sense. These meetings have had a large, positive impact on the instruction at our school.”

Mrs. Knobel will be honored at the next regular meeting of the Fountain Valley School District Board of Trustees on Thursday, April 16th at 7pm.
