  • Open the text set linked above
  • Read the fiction text, “A Day in the Life: Japan” 
  • As you read, annotate for key details that help you identify the theme of the text.
  • When you have finished reading and annotating the text, write a short paragraph in your summer writing journal identifying one theme of the text. Use evidence from the text to support your claim. 
  • If you need help determining the theme, you can read the first article in the text set, “How to Find the Theme of a Book or Short Story” and complete this Theme Analysis worksheet.

  • Today, you should read the informational text, “Many Religions and Beliefs Shape Japanese Purpose in Life”
  • As you read, annotate to determine the central (main idea) of the text. You should highlight any words or phrases that help you understand what the central idea of the text is. 
  • If you need a review of finding the central idea of an informational text, watch this video from week 5.

  • Why were these texts paired together? How is the theme you identified in the fiction text related to the main idea and supporting details in the informational text?  
  • Complete this Paired Text analysis worksheet to answer the questions above. You can print the worksheet out, or copy it into your summer writing journal and complete it there.
