Reading: NewsELA Fiction Text Set
- Open the text set linked above, and read the instructions.
- Preview the short stories, and choose one story to read today.
- When you have finished reading the story, take the quiz.
- Test your knowledge of story elements by identifying each of the elements of plot in the story in your summer writing journal.
- You can draw a plot map, or create an outline. Be sure to identify the following plot terms: exposition (setting, conflict and characters), rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

- Choose a different story to read today. As you read, think about the theme of the story.
- What is the theme of the story you read? Write a theme statement for the story you read. If you need a review of finding a story’s theme, use this theme analysis worksheet.

- This week you have reviewed what you know about plot and theme, AND you have been practicing your writing skills on IXL.
- Put it all together by writing your own short narrative. Choose one of the prompts below to complete in your summer writing journal:
- Write your own short story in the same style as one of the stories you read.
- Write your own short story that has the same theme as one of the stories you read.
- You can use this Plot Map to help you plan your short story.
- Be creative and have fun!
