Transfers

The Fountain Valley School District serves students from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 8th grade. We encourage families to enroll their children in their designated neighborhood "home" school, based on their home address. If you are unsure about your child’s home school, use our School Locator.

Note: Fountain Valley High School is not part of the Fountain Valley TK-8 District. For high school enrollment (9th-12th grade), visit the Huntington Beach Union High School District website.

Important Registration Dates

  • Intra-District Transfer Window: February 3 - March 14, 2025
  • FVSD Inter-District Transfer Window: Monday, March 3, 2025 - April 30, 2025
  • Transitional Kinder & Kindergarten Welcome Event: Thursday, February 20, 2025
  • Enrollment for New Students for the 2025-2026 School Year Opens: Friday, February 21, 2025

Returning FVSD Residents

If you are returning to the Fountain Valley School District, welcome back! To ensure a smooth transition, please review the registration process. Use our School Locator to confirm your home school.

Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year begins on the dates listed above. To enroll, visit your school site and inform the office team that you wish to register for the upcoming school year.

Transferring Within FVSD Schools (Intra-District Transfers)

If you wish to enroll your child in a school other than your designated home school, complete an Intra-District Transfer Form and submit it with proof of residency to your home school. The transfer request period is February 3 - March 14, 2025.

Transferring into the Fountain Valley School District (Inter-District Transfers)

If you live outside the Fountain Valley School District (FVSD) but would like to enroll your child in one of our schools, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your home district and complete an Inter-District Transfer Request.
  2. If your request is approved by your home district, it will be sent to FVSD for review.
  3. FVSD will notify you of the decision based on space availability at your requested school site.

Important Dates:

  • The District begins accepting transfer requests on March 3 for the following school year.
  • Transfer requests for the current school year are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Transfer Agreement and Priority

Inter-District Transfer Agreements:

  • Are valid only for the school year granted and expire at the end of the school year.
  • Must be renewed annually.
  • Priority is given to families who submit their forms by Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

Approval and Lottery Process

Approval is based on:

  • Space availability in the District, at the school site, and within specific grade levels or programs.
  • Compliance with all District policies.

In cases where there are more requests than available spots:

  • A lottery will be conducted to determine placement.
  • Forms must be received by the FVSD Business Office by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 to be included in the lottery.
  • Late forms will be added to the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis.

Revocation of Transfer Agreement

Inter-District Transfer Agreements may be revoked for the following reasons:

  • Excessive tardiness, absences, early drop-offs, or late pick-ups.
  • Poor academic performance.
  • Failure to meet behavior standards.
  • Insufficient space in the school and/or grade level.
  • Providing false or misleading information.
  • Failure of students or parents to follow school rules.

Transferring Out of Fountain Valley School District (Inter-District Transfers)

Parents or legal guardians requesting an Interdistrict Transfer to a school outside the Fountain Valley School District (FVSD) must first complete an Interdistrict Transfer Release Form listed.

Please note:

  • This form is not for families transferring into Fountain Valley.
  • Families seeking to transfer into Fountain Valley School District should contact their current home district to obtain the appropriate paperwork.
 

Transfer Request Notifications and Appeals

  • The District will notify parents of its decision within:
    • 30 calendar days for current-year requests.
    • 14 calendar days after the start of the school year for future-year requests.
  • Appeals: If a transfer request is denied, parents have the right to appeal to the Orange County Board of Education within 30 days of the denial.
  • Timelines: Failure to adhere to the timelines established by the District will be considered an abandonment of the transfer request.

The information provided to Fountain Valley School District (FVSD), during the enrollment process will be used to determine that the student resides within the FVSD attendance boundaries, the school within those attendance boundaries to which the student will be assigned, and to identify unique educational programming services to which the student may be entitled. Information collected will be used for no other purpose, such as restricting or denying enrollment or treating a student differently in determining whether he or she satisfies any admission or enrollment criteria.
