Dr. Gargus began his career as an elementary school teacher in Los Angeles Unified School District, teaching both 4th and 5th grades. He then moved into an administrative role as a middle school assistant principal in Westminster School District, where was later promoted to an elementary school principal and then to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction. In addition, Jerry spent three years in Los Alamitos Unified School District as an elementary principal. Dr. Gargus joins the Fountain Valley School District from Torrance Unified School District, where he served as Coordinator of Intervention and Instruction for their 17 elementary schools. In this role, Dr. Gargus led a team of nine TOSAs.
Superintendent Katherine Stopp shared, “We are excited to have Dr. Gargus step into his new role as Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services. He brings with him a track record of proven success and a collaborative approach to ensuring that every student is prepared for the future. We are confident that he will continue the great work of our District with the same passion and commitment to excellence he has had since joining the FVSD Family.”
Dr. Gargus shared his excitement regarding his appointment, saying, "I am honored to serve the students and staff of the Fountain Valley School District in an even greater capacity in this new role. I look forward to working alongside the teachers, classified staff, the Board of Trustees, administrators, parents, and community to continue to deliver the many programs and services that help our students learn at high levels. I am excited to start this work as we continue to focus on wrapping up the school year.”
Dr. Gargus earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Marshall University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California. Jerry is married to his wife, Karen, a first grade teacher in Torrance Unified SD. They both love spending time with their kids, Karin and Preston. In addition, Dr. Gargus enjoys being outdoors, traveling and attending his children’s many activities.
