The designation was announced on March 10 by Tony Thurmond, California’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction. This year, 408 middle and high schools statewide were selected for the prestigious recognition based on performance data from the 2025 California School Dashboard.
The California Distinguished Schools Program, established in 1985, honors schools that demonstrate exceptional student achievement and strong progress in closing achievement gaps.
Masuda Middle School was recognized for its commitment to academic excellence and the success of its students. The honor reflects the dedication of Masuda’s teachers, staff, students, and families who work together each day to support high levels of learning and achievement.
“Being named a California Distinguished School is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our entire Masuda community,” said district leadership. “We are incredibly proud of our students and staff whose commitment to excellence continues to make Masuda a place where all students can thrive.”
The program alternates annually between elementary schools and secondary schools. Middle and high schools were eligible for recognition in 2026 and will next be considered again in 2028.
Schools earn the distinction based on performance indicators from the California School Dashboard, including academic achievement and progress among student groups. To qualify, schools must also meet strict eligibility criteria, such as testing at least 95 percent of students and maintaining strong outcomes in areas such as suspension and chronic absenteeism.
Masuda Middle School will be formally honored during the California Distinguished Schools Awards Ceremony on April 24 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
The recognition highlights the continued dedication of Fountain Valley School District educators, students, and families to academic excellence and strong outcomes for all learners.
