Week 4 - Day 1

  • In your journal, answer the following prompt: In the text, Toro joins a herd of cows. Do you think the cows consider Toro to be part of their family? Why or why not? Is there someone who you consider to be family that is not related to you?

    • Below are the 7 words the author included footnotes for:
  • cattle herder
  • the bush
  • game park
  • grazed
  • dominance
  • gore
  • devastating
  • Some of these words are very specific and can be used in only a few situations whereas there are some that are more general and can be used more often. 
  • In your journal, sort the above words into two categories:
    • Subject specific (words that can be used in a few situations)
    • General (words that can be used more often
  • For the words under the general category, try to use them in a sentence that does NOT have to do with the article. 
  • IXL - Choose the best concluding sentence

  • Toro, the giraffe in Standing out in the Herd, will not be released back into the wild because he would not be able to survive without the support of his herd. Think about your own life now. Who is in your “herd”? Who is there to support and love you? Who would you not be able to survive without? Talk about your herd in our journal and why they are so important to you.
