Below is the birthday criteria for grade-level placement in the Fountain Valley School District for the 2025-26 school year. This ensures all students are placed in their age-appropriate grade level.

Age Requirements

The Fountain Valley School District follows the California Education Code (Sections 48000 and 48010) for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten enrollment. Please review the information below to ensure your child meets the age requirements for their grade level.

Proof of age is required for all students enrolling in our district. The district does not allow early admission for children who do not meet the age criteria for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten, as stated in Board Policy 6170.1 and Administrative Regulation 5111.

Kindergarten

Children are eligible for Kindergarten if they turn 5 years old on or before September 1, 2025.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Children are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) if they turn 4 years old on or before September 1, 2025.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My child will turn five on September 2. Can they go to Kindergarten?

To start Kindergarten, your child must be five years old on or before September 1, 2025.

We just moved from another country. My child is old enough for 3rd Grade but did not finish 2nd Grade at their last school. Can they be in 2nd Grade?

Children must be enrolled in the grade that matches their age. If you have questions about placement, talk to the principal at your child’s school.

What documents do I need to prove which school or grade my child can attend?

The information provided to Fountain Valley School District (FVSD), during the enrollment process will be used to determine that the student resides within the FVSD attendance boundaries, the school within those attendance boundaries to which the student will be assigned, and to identify unique educational programming services to which the student may be entitled.
