Age Requirements

The Fountain Valley School District strictly follows the age eligibility criteria outlined in the California Education Code (Education Code 48000 and 48010) for entry into Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten programs. Please review the age eligibility requirements below to ensure that your student is enrolled in the appropriate grade level based on these guidelines.

Proof of age is mandatory for all students enrolling in our district. Please note that the Fountain Valley School District does not participate in early admission for underage children into Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten, as outlined in FVSD Board Policy 6170.1 and Administrative Regulation 5111.

Kindergarten

A child is eligible for enrollment in kindergarten at the beginning of the school year, or later in the same year, if their fifth birthday falls on or before September 1, 2024.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

A child is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) if their fifth birthday falls between September 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025.

To enroll for the 2024-25 school year, proof of your child's birth date on or before December 2, 2019, must be provided. Please ensure compliance with these age requirements for a seamless enrollment process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: Although my child will turn five on September 2, can my child go to Kindergarten?

To be eligible for Kindergarten, your child must turn five years old on or before September 1, 2024. Your child is eligible to attend transitional Kindergarten if their fifth birthday is between September 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025.

Question: We just moved from overseas, and my child is age-appropriate for 3rd Grade, but they did not finish 2nd Grade at their prior school. Can I enroll my child in 2nd Grade?

Most of the time, we place children in the age-appropriate grade level. You are welcome to talk to the principal at your child's school regarding any placement questions you may have related to grade level.

Question: We just moved from out-of-state/overseas, and my child is age-appropriate for 6th Grade, but they were in 7th Grade in our city/country. In which grade level will my child be placed?

Question: What kinds of proof do I need to provide to establish which school or grade my child can be enrolled in?

The information provided to Fountain Valley School District (FVSD), during the enrollment process will be used to determine that the student resides within the FVSD attendance boundaries, the school within those attendance boundaries to which the student will be assigned, and to identify unique educational programming services to which the student may be entitled. Information collected will be used for no other purpose, such as restricting or denying enrollment or treating a student differently in determining whether he or she satisfies any admission or enrollment criteria.
