The Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were written by building on the highest state standards in existence in the U.S., examining the expectations of other high performing countries, and carefully studying the research and literature available on what students need to know and be able to do to be successful in college and careers.
In 2010, the California State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards. They are part of the California State Standards along with the California English Language Development (ELD) Standards and Not Generation Science Standards. Students across the state began being assessed on the new standards in the 2014-2015 school year.
The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

California students participate in SBAC assessments and is a governing state in the Consortium. It is expected that students will take the new assessments in the 2014-2015 school year.
