4th Grade Jump Start - Reading: Week 1

Boy reading a book

Reading

Week 1 - Day 1

  • Start an August journal today where you will include all your written work from this month! This could be on Google Docs, in a spiral notebook or just some lined paper.
  • Read The Kids' Table. While reading, pay close attention to the footnotes. These are definitions for some lesser known words that you will find at the bottom of the pages. Think to yourself while reading why you think the author would include them.
  • When done reading, determine the genre of the text. How do you know? Try to be as specific as possible, using examples from the text itself.
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice.

Week 1 - Day 2

  • Reread The Kids' Table and answer the following question in your journal:
    • Which of the following describes what motivates (makes him want to) James to go to the kids’ table?
      • He sees that the kids are not getting along and wants to help.
      • He wants to get away from the boring talk at the adult table.
      • He can see that the kids miss him and want him at their table.
      • He decides to help his mom out by distracting the kids.

  • When James sits at the kids’ table, he is helping out the younger kids. Think back to a time that you were helpful to someone/or a group that was younger than you. Describe the situation in your journal. What was going on? What was your role? How did you help? How did it make you feel? How did it make the younger kid(s) feel?
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice.

Week 1 - Day 3

  • The following is an excerpt from the text:

“I can hear you, you know,” called Aunt Brenda.

“We were just saying how the squirrel…” James pretended to explain, then clamped a hand over his mouth. He winked at the kids before continuing loudly, “ I mean, we love your stuffing, Auntie Brenda.”

  • What do these actions show us about James? What type of character/cousin is he? Use the response checklist to help you organize your thoughts and ideas. Make sure to include evidence from the story to support your answer.
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice.

Week 1 - Day 5

    • Watch this video on theme.
    • Reread The Kids' Table Think about the main theme of the text. Which of the following ideas describes the main theme of The Kids’ Table? (Remember, a theme is a universal idea that can be applied to many different situations, not just this story.
  • Acting like an adult means caring for those that are younger than them.
  • Kids often want to become adults too soon in life.
  • It’s important for adults to set good examples for kids.
  • Now that you have decided on the theme of the story, go back and challenge yourself to find one piece of text evidence that helps support the theme that you picked.
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice.
