Week 4 - Day 1

  • Read Life in a Vernal Pool. While reading, pay attention to the headings that the author uses to help organize the text. This will help you determine a main idea when you are done reading.
  • What genre is this piece of text? How do you know? Use specific examples to support your ideas.  
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

    • Watch this video about vernal pools. 
    • Also, watch this video too to learn about why vernal pools are an excellent habitat for amphibians. 
    • Reread Life in a Vernal Pool. While reading, take notes on the different animals that are found in the pools. Also, add any animals to your list that you learned about in the video clips. 
    • Answer the following question in your journal:
  • Which of the following needs to happen between the hatching of salamanders and frogs and when they leave the pool? 
  • They get strong enough to protect themselves.
  • They leave behind their own eggs
  • They lose their tails and grow legs.
  • They look for new homes in the forest.
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice

  • Answer the following in your journal: How is the life in the vernal pool important/related to the other lives in the rest of the forest? How do animals in the forest rely on the animals that live in the vernal pools?

  • The author repeats the phrase, “life is stirring” at the beginning of the text and at the end of the text. What does this phrase mean? What is the author trying to tell you about vernal pools? What does this make you think about the main idea of the text?

    • Reread Life in a Vernal Pool. When done, determine which of the following is the main idea of the article (the key information that the author wants you to know - remember, don’t get hung up on the small details!). 
  • Vernal pools are good environments to produce life because of the constant changes they go through.
  • Vernal pools go through changes that are important to the life cycles of organisms that live there. 
    • Like many bodies of water, vernal pools provide a stable environment where aquatic animals can live out their lives.  
  • Once you have determined the main idea, challenge yourself to go back into the text and find one piece of text evidence that supports the main idea that you came up with. 
  • Read 30 minutes independently from a book of your choice
